Stewardship of Prayer and Reflection

Lest we, like the lazy servant, think our Master too demanding, note that there is no mention of the Master taking back the sum entrusted to the first two servants or the profit they made with it. Rather, the cautious servant’s fate serves to jolt us out of the “peace and security” complacency Paul warns against. Rather than caution, the Christian community and individual disciples must undertake creative, even daring initiatives for the Kingdom, take a chance on the wealth the Master has invested in us, and encourage others to do the same.

Image result for since you were faithful in small matters

Stewardship of Prayer and Reflection

In one of his early “parishes,” some 2,000 year ago, Paul tried to be as gentle “as a nursing mother,” serving “with such affection” that he shared not only “the gospel of God, but our very selves.” Paul strove not to be a burden, indeed to embrace “toil and drudgery,” so that the word of God he preached would ring true. An ideal that all of us—clergy and laity—can take to heart and put into practice.

Image result for their words are bold but their deeds are few

Stewardship of Prayer and Reflection

For someone who belongs wholly to God, no part of life is strictly “sacred” or “secular.” Everything, everyone is God’s, who calls even the pagan King Cyrus “my anointed ... though you know me not.” A nation’s most loyal citizens are those who, enlightened by Jesus’ gospel, are at once loving critics of the political system in which they live and critical lovers—affirming the good wherever it is found, calling evil by its name, witnessing prophetically and when necessary, heroically.

ly.Image result for people praying

Stewardship of Prayer and Reflection

For us, the “latecomers” may be non-practicing parishioners, non- believers, or notorious sinners welcomed back with “last rites” at “the eleventh hour.” Often, among “devout” disciples, such miracles of grace prompt not thankful prayers but righteous (jealous?) indignation that those “last in” should be treated as “equal to us.” To share life, to share Christ with any fellow-worker at whatever hour would be sheer joy. On the other hand, the parable proposes a secondary, salutary moral: The problem with eleventh-hour conversions is that Death sometimes arrives at 10:55!

Image result for 11 o'clock

QUESTION FOR THE WEEK

How will I stop acting like a self-appointed judge of “latecomers” and begin serving as a member of God’s “welcome wagon”? After all, God has welcomed even me.

Stewardship of Prayer and Reflection

At the time of Jesus, mutual correction is never a punishment, revenge, or settling scores, rather the victory of love.  As Paul puts it, “Owe nothing to anyone, except to love one another; for the one who loves another has fulfilled the law. Love does no evil to the neighbor; hence, love is the fulfillment of the law.”

Image result for children

Stewardship of Prayer and Reflection

Aren’t we missing one of the parable’s important points by casting ourselves solely as willing harvesters? Would we want anyone as zealous and judgmental as we are deciding definitively whether we’re wheat or weeds before we’ve had time to grow to full maturity? Rather than bemoan a world or even a church with weeds growing among the wheat, let us praise God’s gracious patience toward that slowly maturing, mixed-bag field that, after all, includes us.

Image result for God's harvest

THE SIGN OF PEACE. This is more than a jovial handshake. Its older, formal gesture was a hands-to-shoulders embrace. The deacon and priest “model” the gesture for everyone; they also show by their example that this is a ritual gesture requiring simplicity and decorum, not a frantic attempt to shake hands with everyone in church. The words exchanged might simply be “The peace of Christ.” This is never the time for hellos or chitchat. This is an act of liturgy.

Stewardship of Prayer and Reflection

In hidden guise, as Zechariah envisioned, this humble king enters our world still. But to those Paul describes as “in the Flesh” (i.e., locked into worldly values), a humble kingdom that invites but does not compel is no kingdom at all. A discipleship that goes above and beyond is neither easy nor light. But we are “in the spirit;” we see with Jesus’ eyes, judge by Jesus’ standards, delight with Jesus in his Father’s plan... don’t we?

Image result for cross

“Do you understand all these things?” Jesus asks. We may never understand all, but we can bring wisdom “new and old” (Jesus’ Torah/ Moses’ Torah) to bear on life’s dilemmas. And consider the great wealth already ours: “predestined, called, justified, glorified”.

Jesus breathes his re-creating Spirit on the disciples, shows them his wounds, then sends them (and us) forth to love as he loved, to forgive and reconcile. Jesus adds, “Whose sins you retain are retained.” But like the disciples, having been forgiven so many of our own sins of denial, desertion, and cow-ardice, how could we dare not to forgive the sins of a truly repentant person?

Image result for receive the holy spirit

Jesus’ final words restate the identity and confirm the promise— forever: “I am with you always, until the end of the age.” Blessed assurance, indeed, as heeding Acts’ challenge, we turn our eyes from distant skies that beckon us toward heavenly rest and focus instead on this world’s messy streets. There,  as Jesus teaches, we must “see” and serve Jesus in the hungry and thirsty, those lacking clothing and shelter, those sick and imprisoned, the “least” whom we must love the most if we would inherit Jesus’ kingdom.Image result for jesus i am with you always

The future joy begins to be experienced in the present. “This is eternal life... to know you, the only true God, and the one you sent.” Not book knowledge but living knowledge, born of personal relationship, the intimacy enjoyed by friends. Our sense of Jesus’ absence, painfully real at times, must never eclipse our conviction of Jesus’ abiding presence in the Spirit, in our neighbor, and even in our enemies, as we love all others as Jesus commanded us and showed us by his own example, even unto death.

Image result for god and eternal life

Stewardship of Prayer and Reflection

Jesus literally “lays down” his life for his sheep. Through Jesus, we come in to be nurtured within the community and go out to bear witness in passionate conviction and compassionate service. For Jesus has come not only to guide and protect the sheep, but to make sure we flourish: “I came so that they might have life and have it more abundantly” (John 10:10). The Gospel notes, sadly, “The Pharisees did not realize what he was trying to tell them.” May we realize and respond.

Image result for i am the gate of the sheepfold

Stewardship of Prayer and Reflection

We should not be surprised or disheartened (the disciples weren’t) if, just as suddenly as from them, Jesus “[vanishes] from our sight.” But like them, our hearts should “burn within us,” compelling us to “set out at once and return” to the world, despite its darkness, to proclaim what we have heard and seen, to live the loving, self- sacrificing consequences of our Eucharistic encounter with the risen Lord.

Image result for risen lord

Stewardship of Prayer and Reflection

In the New Covenant sealed in Jesus' blood, they alone are able to become instruments of healing and reconciliation who have had to seek healing and reconciliation themselves.  Thus, when the risen Jesus confronts the disciples wit the wounds their cowardice helped inflict, Jesus does so not to submerge those disciples (or us) in guilt, as we might confront unfaithful friends; but to transform broken disciples (and us) with a single word, Jesus' first after their denials and desertion: "Peace" -- Shalom!

Image result for jesus shalom

As Moses struck the rock with his staff, may Jesus’ cross—abiding instrument of God’s unconditional mercy—strike our hardened hearts, unsealing Paul’s celebrated Flood of God’s love “poured out into our hearts through the Holy Spirit.” We sinners are thus made channels of faith’s living water for other thirsty souls, no matter how “outside the Law” they may seem.

Image result for moses sea painting

Stewardship of Prayer and Reflection

No solemn prayer can replace such radical, interpersonal peace- making; even liturgy’s sanctifying power is nullified without reconciliation. Interrupt the liturgy, leave sacred gifts unoffered at the  altar whenever you recall that anyone has anything against you. Note carefully the extraordinary challenge: not if we remember something we’ve actually done, but, remarkably, if you “recall that your [brother/sister] has anything against you;” that is, even if the alleged offense exists only in the other person’s mind.

Image result for solemn prayer

“Most comforting, Jesus is “the Lamb of God, who takes away the [sin/sins] of the world” (John 1:29). In Gospel passages, “sin” appears in the “collective singular,” affirming Jesus’ lifting away the whole crushing burden of a fractured world. In liturgical texts, the plural “sins” is often used, inviting us to entrust to Christ’s infinite compassion our own personal, multiplied share in the brokenness of the wider world.

In fulfillment of the prophecy, Mary is favored. She is raised up by the divine power of the Holy Spirit and through her own openness to the activity of the Lord in her life. How are you called to be like Mary and Joseph, to trust the word of the Lord and act even in a radical way?

Stewardship of Prayer and Reflection

Yet as we take to heart John’s Advent seriousness, some
caution is in order. Lest fear alone motivate us—worse,
lest we be tempted to pose as the Messiah’s assistants,
separating wheat from chaff—does Jesus match
John’s description of God’s fearsome Messiah? Glance
ahead to next Sunday: hearing of a Messiah whose hands hold healing and pardon, not a vengeful winnowing fan, even John will seek a clarification. True, Advent, like discipleship, calls us to firmer conviction and deeper commitment; but Jesus calls us also, and in equal measure, to mercy and compassion.

Image result for second sunday of advent

“Today salvation has come to this house” (Luke 19:8, 2:7, 19:9). In this Jubilee Year of Mercy, invites Pope Francis, do as Zacchaeus did, and climb up the tree of desire for forgiveness. We’ll never be disappointed, Pope Francis assures us, for Jesus is merciful, calls us by name, and never grows tired of forgiving! Where will I go in search of those who want to see Jesus?

?Image result for salvation has come to this house
